The conference on “Evolving News Consumption in New Media Environment: Theorizing the Impact of New
Communication Technology on News Consumption”istobeheld during August 15thand16th,2011inHonolulu,Hawaii,U.S.
This conference aims to bring together scholars that conduct research on changing news consumption and its consequences in the face of today’s ever changing new communication technologies. The conference seeks to provide an opportunity in which researchers deliberate various aspects of changing news consumption behaviors using a theory-based approach. In the related theories, the changing news consumption can be treated as independent variable and dependent variable.
The digital age, along with the World Wide Web and the Internet, and more recently social media and mobile phone, is drastically altering the news media landscape, thus challenging traditional models of news production, circulation, and consumption. Indeed the paradigmatic shifts in the news media environments have altered the way citizens consume news. Nowadays people get news from far more diverse media outlets in varied formats than ever before. Many people have moved away from newspapers and broadcast news, the so-called traditional news media, in search for alternative news sources. People now generate their own news content in various forms and exchange it with one another online or over mobile technology. Individuals’ ability to actively participate in news production and to influence political and media agenda has tremendously increased. Some scholars argue that this is a positive step towards a brighter future for the media and democracy while others raise concerns about how the diversified but polarized news media environment divides and fragments citizenry. In addition, citizens nowadays are faced with the challenge of having to sift through the vast amount of information available on the Internet, much of it neither checked nor verified by anyone, and much of it in the form of ‘infotainment’ rather than news. On the other hand, many scholars give attention to what factors have drastically changed citizens’ news consumption behaviors. New communication technologies, new political environments, some economic factors including cost of media usages have been addressed as affecting changes in media consumption.
While these changes in news media environment and news consumption patterns are taking place all over the world, there are some significant differences in the nature and extent of change for various countries due to many political, economical, and technological factors. This conference aims to provide an open forum for comparative analyses of changing news consumption all over the world in the face of the changing news media environment. We hope to stimulate scholarly exchange of different theoretical perspectives and to move towards the development of theories that enhance our understanding of the impact of a paradigmatic change in new communication technologies on news consumption worldwide.
The conference organizers welcome contributions of papers that address topics including (but not limited to) the following.
▷ Comparative analysis of the changes in news consumption in different countries (U.S. , Korea, China, Singapore etc)
▷ Analysis of the impact of new media technologies on news consumption patterns.
▷ Analysis of the impact of new media technologies on news gathering practices, newsrooms cultures, or journalistic values.
